December 19-22

Happy Holidays and Happy New Year to each and every one of you! I look forward to seeing you all in 2023. I wish you rest, relaxation and lots of quality time with loved ones this winter break.

Upcoming Important Dates

  • December 23: No School
  • January 9: Back to School

Holiday Spirit Week:
We had a hilariously fun week together celebrating Holiday Spirit Week at LBS! Thank you for sending your children with holiday spirit, festive clothing/accessories and with continued excitement and joy for school. It was a fabulous way to close out the first half of Grade 1/2! PS - I hope you enjoy participating in our Holiday Challenge! I look forward to hearing stories or even seeing pictures when we return to school!

Grade 1/2 in Room 10 for Christmas Carolling!

Holiday Challenge! Sent home with all students
(if you were away, please email me and I can send you a copy to print off at home!)

Math: Games!
Our favourite way to practice the knowledge and skills we learn in class is to play games! These are some of the games we learned this week to help us add, subtract, and learn more about shape attributes. Ask your child about the strategies they use when adding or subtracting!

Science: Snowflakes
As Scientists, we are exploring Snowflakes. We begun our learning by having a discussion about what we already know and what we want to know. This shows students critical thinking as they are able to communicate their prior knowledge and ask questions that they are curious about. This winter inspired inquiry will challenge students to demonstrate skills and procedures outlined in the front matter of the curriculum. See below!

Word Work: Holiday Words
Our class brainstormed Holiday Words and WOW we had so many that we almost ran out of room on our poster! Students used this word list during Daily LA's Word Work station to practice different strategies like ABC Order, red & blue words, rainbow words and our newest one: sailboat! Ask your child which word work option is their favourite so far from our menu!

Reading: Sight Words!
We have been practicing reading sight words in Daily LA. Sight words are words that we all need to know as they help us string together sentences. They can be tricky because we can't always sound them out with chunking or segmenting or stretching like usual. Here is a sample list of Grade 1 and 2 sight words. This full list will be sent home with the Home Reading Packages soon!

December 12-16

 Upcoming Important Dates:

  • Monday Dec 19: Christmas Bling Day!
  • Tuesday Dec 20: Ugly Sweater Day
  • Wednesday Dec 21: Green Day/Grinch Day
  • Thursday Dec 22: PJ Day!
  • December 23-January 8: Christmas Holiday
  • Monday January 9: Classes Back

Social Studies:
As part of our Social Studies curriculum and Indigenous ways of knowing, we have been exploring the 7 Sacred Teachings. Through stories, sharing circles, class discussions, videos and follow up activities, students have developed an understanding of each teaching and the impact they have on our daily lives in school, at home, with friends, with family and within ourselves.

Through this learning, we will continue to work on the follow Social Studies outcomes:

Grade 1:
  • I can describe the connections we have to Indigenous and diverse cultures found in our communities
  • I can explore ways in which Indigenous peoples and diverse cultural groups contributed to the origins and evolutions of our community over time
Grade 2:
  • I can describe how the presence of Indigenous origins is reflected in the community today
  • I can explore the cultural characteristics of Indigenous communities

Math:
We are learning about number lines in math! Number lines can help us count and they can also be used as a strategy for operational problems (adding, subtracting, multiplying, and even dividing!) Our learning with number lines started with counting. Grade 1s counted by 1s from 0-25 while Grade 2s skip counted on their number lines by 2s or 5s as high as they could go. The biggest challenge was keeping straight lines all the way down - ask your child what their strategy was for this!

Word Work:
As part of our Word Work, we will be practicing spelling and manipulating words using the word work menu below. We have already learned red and blue words as well as ABC order!

In Ms. Greenhall's Word Work Group students have been learning about consonants. This week we reviewed the letters V, Y, and Z using the Animated Literacy actions. We then cut and sorted pictures that start with these letters. Those who finished early tried to spell the items in their pictures and then moved onto a literacy game. Ask your child about the actions and sounds for  V,Y and Z.

In Ms. Lacour's Word Work Group students have been learning about short vowels. This week we continued with short "E" and looked at the "ET" and "EG" word families. We then sorted pictures to match the corresponding words. Ask your child about words in the "ET" and "EG" family.

In Ms. Gierl and Ms. Green's long vowel groups, students worked on their short and long sounds that i makes. We continued our work with King E by comparing words like: hid - hide, pin - pine, fin - fine, shin - shine, bit - bite. It is fun to think of long vowel words - try it at home! "What is the long vowel word for ________?"

Phys. Ed:
In Phys. Ed we learned a new game called: Do You Want to Build a Snowman? In this game, we worked in teams of 3 to build a snowman with a variety of gym equipment. Each student on a team becomes an Elf, Reindeer, or Santa and when the teacher calls a type of Christmas creature, all of the students run clockwise in the gym, collect 1 piece of equipment and add it to their snowman. We had SNOW much fun!

Grade 1s were challenged to use sensory language while Grade 2s extended beyond sensory language to include synonyms. All students continued their work with sky, grass, dirt printing as well as letter formation, spacing and sizing. First we planned, then we drafted, then we conferenced to edit our work and then we published! Conferences Follow Up

Hi Families,

Thank you so much for your time, attention and care at our conferences a couple of weeks ago. I've had a chance to meet with every family in Room 12 now - it was so great to connect with you all about your child's learning and time at school.

As many of us discussed, there are some easy and simple things that you can do at home to support your kiddo in reading, writing, and math. I've listed some things below for your to refer to as you wish!

Reading Suggestions:

  • Daily Reading for 5-15 minutes! Keep an eye out for our Home Reading Package soon.
  • Elkonin Boxes
    • Elkonin Boxes are a great way for kids to segment the different sounds they hear in words.
    • They don't need to know the exact letter or combination - more so the SOUND they are hearing.
    •  How to use sound boxes in Kindergarten - Simply KinderHow to use sound boxes in Kindergarten - Simply Kinder

  • Short and Long Vowels
    • Many of us are working on short and long vowel sounds. It is important for us to notice these spelling patterns in our reading! Try it when you're completing home reading.
Long and Short Vowel Charts | Vowel chart, Teaching vowels, Short vowels
  • Word Hunts
    • Play games when you are driving, walking, grocery shopping, etc. "I see a dog... What sounds are in dog?" "d-o-g" ""I see a truck... What sounds do you hear in truck?" "t-r-u-ck"
  • Reading Opportunities
    • Take as many opportunities as you can to encourage your child to read. They can help read recipes, grocery lists, instructions for games, road signs, store names, etc. Get them noticing the ways in which we use reading in the real world!

Math Suggestions:
Math Games

  • Make 10: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hYywjIm--uo&t=22

  • I Spy & Wild Jacks: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vUA6STeVruk
Representing Numbers
  • Practice showing numbers in different ways! This is great to do on paper - and even better if it is inside a sleeve and they can use a whiteboard!
  • So far we have practiced standard form, word form, expanded form, base 10 blocks and tally marks!
