Halloween at LBS

Hi Families,

TOMORROW (Friday, October 29th) is Halloween at LBS! Please feel free to dress up and bring a board game to school. We ask that costumes do not have face coverings, are not violent, and are comfortable enough to wear for the day!

It will be a spooooktacular day!

Veterans Food Drive

Veterans Food Drive

Dear Parents and Guardians,

The Grade 6 Students in Action Club have organized and will be running a food drive starting on November 1st and ending on November 16th. The collected food will be going to the Veterans Food Bank, as Remembrance Day is coming up and we would like to show our appreciation for our Veterans.  This also connects to our learning in preparing for the upcoming Remembrance Day assembly that Room 7 and Room 8 will be hosting.

Please bring non-perishable food items such as: soup, pasta, baby food, cereal, peanut butter, protein or granola bars, trail mix and canned goods like fish or vegetables. Any other non-perishable items that you think of are welcomed to be donated. Don’t forget to try and bring some gluten free or nut free items in case of anyone with allergies.

Move-ember Challenge!

November is movement month at LBS! We are encouraging students to be active throughout the winter with a movement challenge for move-ember :)

Students are encouraged to keep track of their movement minutes outside of school time from November 1-30. The class that earns the most movement minutes at the end of the month will earn a special reward! Please support your child in tracking their movement minutes either on Google Classroom or hardcopy (this will be specified by your child's teacher).

Let’s encourage each other to be active and healthy! See the video for more information about our at school and at home challenges for the month.

Monday October 18: No School

Thursday October 21: PJ Day

Friday October 29: Halloween at LBS

Hello Room 12 Families,

I hope you all had a restful Thanksgiving weekend filled with time feeling gratitude and joy. We had a busy week in Grade 4/5. We are looking forward to another long weekend ahead as teachers have a Professional Development Day on Monday, October 18th so no school for kids! Read about our highlights below:

INQUIRY: JACKDAW MINI MUSEUM

Did you know a Jackdaw is a type of bird that collects items? We were inspired by these birds and have begun collecting items that represent the regions that we researched. Grade 4s researched Regions of Alberta while Grade 5s researched Regions of Canada. Ask me about the region I researched and the items I am collecting for my Jackdaw Mini-Museum!

We need to bring all of our items to school next week!

MATH: GRAPHING - DOUBLE BAR, PICTOGRAPH, MATH MYSTERY

For Math Mystery, we had to using our graphing skills to identify the Greedy Gnome who was stealing all of the supplies for Mathmania. Check back next week to learn who the culprit is...

LITERACY: WORD WORK & NOVEL STUDY GROUPS

We did a spelling inventory in September and learned about our strengths and areas for improvement. Using the information gathered from the inventory, we were all placed into groups with other kids that have the same learning goals. Some of the groups are working on vowel sounds, inflected endings or common long vowels. Here are some photos of our word sorts and rules we explored this week!

LITERACY: ADDING DIALOGUE TO WRITING

GREEN CALGARY

We engaged with a virtual Guest Speaker from Green Calgary - the session was called "From Farm to Table to Compost" and it taught us about food waste and
how we can reduce waste in our schools and homes. Read about it some more below:

ESSENTIAL QUESTIONS DISCUSSED:

  1. What do you think is the most common food waste?
    1. Vegetables, fruit, leftovers, bakery, dairy, meat
  2. How much food do you waste?
  3. Why do we waste food?
  4. What happens to our food waste?
  5. Where does your food come from?
INTERESTING FACTS WE LEARNED:

  1. 63% of food waste in Canada, could have been eaten. 140 kg of waste is produced per household, per year. Costing an average of $1, 100 every single year.
  2. Calgary has 3 landfills! Before COVID, students could tour the landfill to learn more.
  3. 30% of our food waste in Canada is vegetables.
  4. Carrots take A LOT of work to produce and get into stores than we thought.
  5. Anything that goes into the wrong bin, immediately goes to the landfill. Which is filling our landfills with the wrong stuff!
