Artist in Residence
We completed our Artist in Residence program this week! Sharon highlighted line work through the stories of Peter H. Reynolds by contrasting calm and chaotic lines and quiet and loud lines. Students travelled around the room creating the lines with their bodies and then applied their learning with different sized sharpies. This is how our art looks all together! We can't wait for you to see it during our Conferences in November!

Math

In math, we are exploring quantities to 100 in Grade 1 and quantities to 1000 in Grade 2. Students are investigating different ways of representing numbers. Some ways that we have practiced so far are base 10, ten frames, tallies and numerals. This week, we went on a tally hunt throughout our classroom - check it out below!

Language Arts

We have completed our daily word work with a focus on the alphabet! Students have continued to generate words that start with the sound of each letter in the alphabet. In grade 1, we are focussing on applying initial sounds and ending sounds while in Grade 2 we are working on segmenting all sounds we can hear in each word.

We also explored some new montessori materials during Opening Task time and our Daily LA routine. Ask your child how they have used the following materials:

Science
We began discussing colour in Science this week and continued our work with seasons (focusing on Autumn). For colour, students explored and discussed the colour wheel, primary and secondary colours and how colour can related to emotions. Our work with this will continue next week as we dive deeper into emotions when we watch the film Inside Out & examine how colour can represent a variety of emotions.
We also tried a new thinking routine called "PLUSSING!" Plussing is a practice where students add an idea to someone else's work to enhance and share their learning and understanding. Ask your child about how plussing works in our classroom!

Social Studies
Thank you to all of the families who sent in special artifacts with their Family Questionnaires. It was AMAZING to have such rich and exciting discussions around each student and their ancestry. We will continue our artifact sharing next week!

Halloween

Halloween 👻
Halloween is Monday, October 31st. Students are invited to wear Halloween costumes if they would like. We remind all students that there is no gore, no masks and no weapons.  Students should come with their costumes on. Please ensure that costumes are comfortable to be worn throughout the day and will be safe and suitable for all daily activities such as gym, recess and learning time. Inflatable costumes are challenging for students to work in throughout the day. We are asking that grade 1/2 students do not wear inflatable costumes. In keeping with nutrition and health protocols, we ask for no additional treats or snacks to be sent in.

The parade is BACK!  We are so happy to welcome families back to the school for our Halloween parade. The gym will be set up for costume viewing. Our parade will start at 1:00 and students will wander through the gym to showcase their costumes. If you would like to join us, please come to the front door and join us in the gym for 1:00.  Please connect with your child’s teacher if you do not want your child participating in Halloween activities, such as the parade, during the day.

November 1st will be the Spirit Day chosen by rooms 10 and 12. We will be having a Pajama Day. All staff and students are invited to wear their comfy pjs for the day.

We are almost done learning all of the letters in the alphabet! This week we focused on letters U, V, X, and J. In our journals, we practiced brainstorming words, drawing pictures and fearless spelling! We also started using some new Montessori materials, focusing on language, that we can use during Daily LA and as a Responsible Work Choices. Ask your child about the materials they like to use and/or the actions we have learned for each of the letters so far! Here are some photos of our work:

Science
Oh, happy Fall! We have been SO lucky for this amazing, sunny and warm start of the school year. To enjoy the weather and the beauty of our natural surroundings, the students went on a leaf hunt in our school yard - focusing on finding a variety of types, shapes, sizes, and colours so that we could build some leaf creatures. The creativity and joy was so exciting :)

Social Studies
As part of our Social Studies curriculum, students will be exploring their sense of identity within their different communities. To start this work, we will be sharing about ourselves and our ancestors. Thank you for taking the time to fill out the Questionnaire with your child. We are all so excited to learn more about ourselves and each other in Room 12.
