Epic Books App
In literacy this week, we learned about listen to reading on Epic. If you are able, please send headphones (aux jack is acceptable) for your child to use at school. They will be kept in their cubby to use during listen to reading time. This year we will be using Epic as our levelled reading app at school! We do have a class code (I believe it only works between 7am-3pm) but feel free to try it at home! lbe3277

Library Books

This week we had our first visit to the library! Each student can take out 2 library books for the duration of 2 weeks. Students can leave their books at school or bring them home. We have library time every Tuesday afternoon so if your child wants to exchange their books please ensure if they brought one home that it is sent back to school for library time. If a library book becomes overdue, a notice will be sent home.

Looking to shop for books online through Scholastic year-round? I have set up a scholastic account for our class. By using our class code you can help our class earn points to put towards new books! I will be sending home Scholastic flyers each month. Happy reading!

Birthday Walk

Is your child's birthday coming up? At LBS we like to celebrate with the Montessori Birthday Walk Around the Sun. A Google Slide template has been created for families to fill out for their child's birthday. I will also email it out each month to those who have a child with a birthday that month. Please carefully review the instructions and let me know if you have any questions. Please make a copy and do not edit the template. When it is complete, please share the link with me through email so I can share it with the class on your child's special day!

Artist in Residence

This week we began our sessions with artist and educator, Sharon Fortowsky our Artist in Residence! She has led the K-2 students in exploring artwork found in books written by Peter Reynolds. Students have learned about how we can use pigment derived from flowers and vegetables to paint with and how mixing with water can change the tones and shades of the colours.

This week, we used marigold and beet juice on both a wet and dry canvas to create bleeding and/or oozing effects. Ask me about it at home!

Math

We began working with numbers this week! Using 100 Boards, 1000s Squares, and Montessori Golden Beads - students began counting and ordering numbers as well as exploring the patterns we can find within our number system. Next week we will be representing numbers in different ways including base 10 charts, tallies, ten frames, and more!
