Gymnastics!

Gymnastics

We will begin gymnastics in our regularly scheduled gym classes on Monday, April 25th.  The gymnastics unit will last two weeks.  Safety routines, cooperation and sportsmanship are taught and reviewed in each class.

This physical activity opportunity will help students acquire individual skills through a variety of developmentally appropriate movement activities.

It is important for students to come to school prepared for being actively engaged. The following guidelines are very helpful…

HEAD TO TOE - READY TO GO!!!

Head ....................... long hair pulled back

Ears/Throat/Wrist ............... jewellery off

Shirt.................................. one layer shirt

Waist ................................................tucked in

Pants.........................sporty pants or shorts, no belts or zippers

Ankles..........................pants rolled up if ankles are covered

Toes...............running shoes, gymnastic slippers or bare feet (no footed tights)

“Playing & moving safely is everyone’s responsibility”

Rules for ALL students participating in Gymnastics!

Field Trip Monday!

Hello Families,

We are so excited for our field trip to Telus Spark on Monday!

Please try your best to have your child arrive on time on Monday morning as our class will be reviewing expectations and the schedule for the day. We will be departing Lake Bonavista School at 8:45 a.m. Please ensure your child has a litterless lunch, a water bottle and is dressed appropriately for the weather as we will spend a portion of the day outdoors. Students will only be bringing their lunch bag and water bottle on the field trip and will gather the rest of their belongings when we arrive back at school at the end of the day. Students will not have access to the cafeteria or gift shop and do not need any money.

Please let me know if you have any questions or concerns regarding our field trip.

Yay for Spring! We had an exciting week at school - enjoying the beginning of our Artist in Residence and the beautiful Spring weather.

Writing:

We read the story The Day the Crayons Quit and chose our own colours to write from their perspective. We had to think about the way they were feeling and use the Show Don't Tell strategy to describe. Please see some pictures below!

Science:

We are beginning our work with Plant Life Cycles and Wetlands. Our Tower Garden will host mystery vegetable seeds and we will observe their growth over the next few weeks. Hopefully we will get to eat them (if they grow!) We also planted Alberta Wildflowers in pots on the compound with all of the Grade 4/5's to help us make colours for paints with our Artist in Residence.

Art:

We have an Artist in Residence named Sharon Fortwosky. She is teaching us about how we can use the natural world to create art. Like paper, paint or dye! After our class (and the other div II classes) make their paint out of different things - like mint, beets, onions, birch, purple cabbage - we will get to create paintings that will go on the front of our sketching booklets. Each class has a different item/colour! Our class is in charge of Mint leaves and stems. We tested the PH levels of the colours from the mint by using vinegar and baking soda. This changed the colour a little bit - it was cool!

Buddies:

We are partners with Ms. Midgley's Grade 1 class this year! We got to meet them last week for an introduction and this week we had a picnic snack and outdoor play time. They are so cute, small and energetic!

SOCIAL STUDIES/WRITING: INFLUENTIAL CANADIAN BIOGRAPHIES

Students were working hard this week to research a historical/influential Albertan or Canadian figure. They explored people such as those in the Famous Five, Joseph Tyrrell, Sir John A Macdonald, Chief Crowfoot and Guy Weadick. Researching things such as birth, family, early life, adult life, and legacy/impact on Alberta/Canada. Ask your student who they researched and what they've learned!

Next week students will be taking their research notes & transferring them into paragraphs for a formal biography report. We are excited to practice organization, sequencing and using text features to enhance our writing!

FRENCH - LES SAISONS FLIPBOOKS

Students are building their French vocabulary and testing their artistic abilities through this assignment. Ask your student what new words they have learned in French this week!
